PICO CANYON, Los Angeles County — Old Glory, the large valley oak at Pico Canyon Park, has official county historic landmark protection dating to September 24, 2024.
The Board of Supervisors’ resolution describes the tree as approximately 400 years old. The oak became nationally known after a 2002 conservation campaign opposing its removal for a residential development. Activist John Quigley spent 71 days in the tree, and the oak was eventually transplanted approximately one-quarter mile to its current park location in 2004.
Why the landmark boundary matters
The county resolution protects the tree, its root system and surrounding space, not simply a numbered spot on a map. Special care and maintenance requirements reflect the significance of the historic transplant.
Visitors may view Old Glory at 25600 Pico Canyon Road but should not enter the fenced area, disturb roots or remove branches. The historic designation is a 2024 decision, not a newly announced 2026 event.
