PICO CANYON, Los Angeles County — The historic settlement of Mentryville in Pico Canyon preserves a chapter of the earliest commercial oil development in the American West.
The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority explains that the productive Pico No. 4 oil well became a landmark industrial site. The surrounding town, named for oil-field pioneer Charles Alexander Mentry, developed into a settlement serving workers and their families. In its heyday, the community contained homes, a school and industrial facilities.
What remains today?
MRCA identifies several historic structures associated with Mentryville, including a large former residence, a one-room schoolhouse and a barn. Some sites are state-recognized historical landmarks. The area lies within the Santa Clarita Woodlands open-space network.
Historic photographs and visitor descriptions do not necessarily establish that building interiors are open to the public. Guests should check current land manager rules and follow posted boundaries when visiting.
